One of Bristol's oldest Churches The Priory Church of St James in town, has restored a statue of a bare-breasted woman whose torso was discreetly covered for centuries.

There is speculation that the half-clad figure was considered too much of a distraction for Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and his followers.

Swansea Valley Miners Appeal Fund

Got this today. Please show your support.

The deaths of four miners at the Gleision Colliery was the worst mining accident Wales has seen for generations.

This tragedy is a stab through the heart of the community. We can't even imagine what the families are going through.

But they need our help to survive and recover in the future. So today I am launching an Appeal Fund to help support them and will be announcing other patrons shortly.

Please give what you can to support the families. Donate online now or send cheques to: Swansea Valley Miners Appeal Fund, 39 Windsor Road, Neath, SA11 1NB.

Thank you.

Peter Hain

MP for Neath

John Cooper Clarke is playing the The Fleece on the Sunday 27th November. If you haven't seen him before get on it.

I saw him in Cardiff earlier on in the year and he was banging. I tought it would just be poetry and that. But it's like seeing a stand up. He's proper funny.

Evidently Chicken is one of my all time favorites.

Local girl sings at Glastonbury

10 year old Shae White from Fishponds took Glastonbury by storm when she was asked up on stage to sing with Jessy J. There's talks of her going on to do X Factor. Well Shae if you do you'll get my full support. She got a cracking voice for someone so young. I'd cack myself if I had to sing in front of 100,000.

Fishponds has a bit of history of  reality tv singers. Paul Potts winner of the first series of Britain's Got Talent was from Fishponds. I saw him sing 'Love changes everythimg'' at All Saints when I was younger. He use to sing in the choir aswell (I think). He's now got two Platinum selling Albums in the UK aswell as Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Good luck to you Shae.

Local Urban Legends

Posted by boyfromfishponds on July 14, 2011 at 6:20 AM Comments comments (2)

So I came across Eugene Byrne's search for Bristol Myths (http://eugenebyrne.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/bristol-urban-myths) the other day.

The one that sprang into my head was the one about that the Cossham Lad in the war.

In the second world war German planes had to fly over Kingswood on the way to the docks in town. Seeing these planes flying over a local lad was worried that they were going to bomb Kingswood. So he climbed to the top of Cossham Tower with a torch and started to send morse code messages upto the German bombers. He sent a message saying ''Do not bomb here. This is Cossham Hospital built by Handel Cossham who was a German.''

This young man was spotted by a LDV (Local Defence Volunteer). Who promptly dragged him down from the tower to take him to the local police station. Then he was put through the courts, where he was convicted of treason and sentenced to life in prison. Which is where he eventually died.

I spoke to my ma about this and she had heard of a different story. The lad wasn't a misguided local who in his own way thouht he was protecting his area. But a full blown, shit your pants Nazi trying to support the German bombers.

So one could be true and the other could propaganda or they could both be aload of bollocks that have some how worked there way into local legend. But I suppose that the great thing about urban legends.

Any one else think of any good ones?
